About Us

The Caribbean Corona Chronicles Oral History Archive is an initiative of the Caribbean Civilisation Unit of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. We operate as part of the Regional Unit that encompasses all five campuses of The UWI- Cave Hill, Mona, Open Campus, and Five Islands. The project is also supported by the Department of History at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

The Caribbean Civilisation Unit is responsible for the delivery of the unified, regional foundation course, FOUN1101 – Caribbean Civilisation, which provides insight into the ethos of the Caribbean. This ethos highlights the existence of culture and civilisation in the region. The insights gained from this course forms the foundation for knowledge in all other courses offered by the University of the West Indies.

FOUN1101 seeks to redress issues such as cultural, ethnic and gendered asymmetries that have characterised traditional understandings of the Caribbean and its people. By addressing these issues, the Course seeks to provide content areas to ensure that students understand the contemporary Caribbean as an autonomous area of study (through an interdisciplinary regional lens), on par with other area studies within the global context.

In line with our purpose, this Oral History Project will provide opportunities for the examination of the impacts of this pandemic on the people of the Caribbean- our structures, cultures and identities- and to critically think about our post-pandemic development. Our eclectic team of researchers, most of whom are instructors in the Caribbean Civilisation course and The Department of History, are dedicated to ensuring the quality, applicability and functionality of this archive to enhance our pedagogy and our people.
